AUDIO: Lake Erie 19th Century Shipwreck Confirmed02/19/2026A newly discovered shipwreck in Lake Erie has been confirmed and announced by Toledo’s National Museum of the Great Lakes and the Cleveland Underwater Explorers, also known as CLUE. The ship was a stone-hauling vessel called the Clough, which sank northeast of Cleveland on September 15, 1868 during a gale. The museum’s Director of Archaeology and Research Carrie Sowden explains what the discovery represents… The museum has opened a temporary exhibit that showcases the discovery. It also pays tribute to CLUE founder David VanZandt, who was tragically lost in June 2024. The exhibit is included with admission to the National Museum of the Great Lakes.
