Outbreak of diarrhea-causing parasite grows to more than 1,000 cases07/09/2026NEW YORK (AP/WBCL) — Michigan is experiencing its largest outbreak of a parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhea. Nearly 1,000 people have been diagnosed with cyclospora as of Wednesday, though no deaths have been reported. The source remains unidentified.Cyclospora spreads through contaminated food and water, often linked to fresh produce. Investigations are also underway in 28 other states, including Ohio. Michigan officials first announced the outbreak last week with over 170 cases. By Wednesday, the number had grown to 992, with about 40 hospitalizations. Health officials advise washing produce thoroughly and seeking medical attention if symptoms persist.The Ohio Department of Health also urges you to take extra precautions to help prevent the spread of cyclosporiasis.
