New Laws Taking Effect Jan. 1 in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan

With the new year comes new laws that could affect you. Starting January 1, 2025, a variety of laws will take effect depending on whether you live in Indiana, Ohio, or Michigan. They are the following:
 
Indiana
  • The state income tax rate will drop to 3%.
  • Restrictions on working hours for 16- and 17-year-olds will be eased, allowing them to work any shift an adult can. Restrictions for 14- and 15-year-olds will stay in place. 

Ohio

  • The minimum wage for nontipped workers will increase to $10.70 an hour and to $5.35 an hour for tipped workers.
  • The new “bathroom bill” regarding transgender students will take effect and applies to students in Ohio’s public and private schools.
  • K-12 students will be allowed three Religious Expression Days to be absent each school year
  • School districts will be required to adopt a cellphone use policy.

Michigan

  • The minimum wage will increase to $10.56 an hour with another increase to $12.48 an hour in February.
  • Tipped employees will receive 48% of the minimum wage.
  • High school coaches across Michigan will be required to be trained in CPR and AED and ensure that schools have cardiac preparedness plans in place.
