Michigan Health Officials Warn of Recreational Nitrous Oxide Abuse06/06/2025Health officials in Michigan are warning about a dramatic increase in emergency incidents across the state related to the recreational use of nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.” Between 2019 and 2023, emergency room visits increased by 757% involving nitrous oxide misuse. Nitrous oxide is used in medical settings and commercially in steel aerosol whipped cream dispensers. Health officials say chronic use can have serious adverse health effects including severe neurological damage and negative mental health effects.
