Indiana DNR Asking Public to Report Mediterranean Gecko Sightings10/23/2025Your help is needed by the Indiana DNR to report sightings of Mediterranean geckos, which is an exotic lizard species that’s not dangerous and has been seen at several locations statewide. The Indiana DNR says they’re believed to have come here by hitchhiking on shipments. Mediterranean geckos are native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and northern Africa, and the DNR says they can’t easily spread in Indiana because of needing a heated building to survive winter. They’re described as being 4 to 5 inches long, tan or pink in color with brown blotches on their body, and having warty skin. You’re asked to report gecko sightings to the Indiana DNR at HerpSurveys@dnr.IN.gov Mediterranean gecko. Provided by: Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
