Holiday Decorating Safety Tips11/26/2025If you’re planning on decorating for Christmas this weekend after Thanksgiving, it’s important to do it safely. The National Fire Prevention Association says fire departments responded to an average of 832 home fires per year that began with decorations, not including Christmas trees. Tips from the NFPA include choosing decorations that are flame resistant, keeping lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn, and replacing any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Before leaving or going to bed, blow out lit candles and turn out all light strings and decorations. Lastly, test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan.
