Communities Assessing Flood Damage, Working to Mitigate Flooding; Potential for Future Property Tax Relief08/20/2026Hamilton County Emergency Management staff and volunteers are assessing damage caused by last week’s historic flooding. It’s the first step in a three-step process that could help determine whether federal assistance is available. County officials say you should not wait for an assessment team to begin documenting your damage or contacting your insurance company. If you’ve been affected, keep photos and other records showing the extent of property damage. You may see low-flying helicopter activity in the vicinity of Hazel Dell Parkway and 106th Street in Carmel. It’s part of active, coordinated flood mitigation efforts. The city says there’s no cause for alarm and all city utilities remain fully operational. City of Carmel teams and private engineering partners now have an initial temporary dam fully formed that spans the water flow.If you live in Hamilton County, you may qualify for future property tax relief if your property was significantly damaged by flooding. You must complete State Form 137R and submit it to the Hamilton County Assessor’s Office no later than December 31, 2027. Any adjustment would apply to the January 1, 2026 assessment date, payable in 2027. Properties with severe damage will require a site inspection as part of the review process.
