FWCS Superintendent Calls on Federal Officials to Release Federal Funding

07/03/2025
While the federal government is withholding nearly $4.5 million in federal funding for Fort Wayne Community Schools, Superintendent Dr. Mark Daniel issued the following statement:

"The federal government's decision to withhold nearly $4.5 million in Title funding promised to Fort Wayne's public and private schools is devastating to our community. This congressionally appropriated money now sits in limbo just one month before the 2025-26 school year begins, threatening essential educational services across our district.

The withheld grant funds support critical areas of education including services for English language learners, adult education and teacher professional development—programs that directly impact thousands of students and families in our community.

Professional development funding is used for New Teacher Orientation and for staff to gain important certifications. This investment in staff creates a ripple effect that strengthens the entire educational environment, benefiting students, families and the broader school community.

Each year, more than 200 adult learners earn their high school equivalency diplomas through these federally funded programs, opening doors to career opportunities and enabling them to become vital contributors to our community's economic growth.

Last year alone, FWCS served more than 4,400 students learning English. This crucial support helps these students unlock their potential and access unlimited future opportunities.

These funds also support a well-rounded education for all students by incorporating advanced classes, foreign language, STEAM and other innovative programs.

Federal Title funding creates a powerful, interconnected system that supports English language learners, early childhood education, adult learners and teacher professional development. These investments drive academic achievement, workforce readiness and economic mobility—laying the foundation for thriving communities.

Our students deserve the resources that Congress intended for them. We call on federal officials to immediately release these critical funds so that Fort Wayne students can begin the school year with the support they need and deserve.

Dr. Mark Daniel, Superintendent Fort Wayne Community Schools"
