Fireworks Safety Tips with Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan Agencies07/03/2025It’s important to use fireworks safely as you’re celebrating Independence Day. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says in 2024, there were about 14,700 fireworks injuries and 11 lives lost. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal, and Michigan State Police share some fireworks safety tips with you: Do not hold lit fireworks in your hand, Never allow children to use or light fireworks or sparklers, Never try to relight “dud” fireworks. Instead, douse them with water, Always have water or a fire extinguisher ready, checking the fire danger risk in your area, Only buy from a verified company, Only light one firework at a time, And, wear eye protection. The agencies also remind you to use fireworks legally. 1.4G consumer fireworks are legal in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan, but check your local ordinances to see whether or not fireworks are allowed and what times they can be set off. And, the Indiana DHS says to be considerate of pets, which can be scared by the noises, people with PTSD or other medical conditions, and sleep disruption from late-night fireworks.
