City of Fort Wayne Offering Bicycle Safety Sessions for Kids

06/15/2026
News release from the City of Fort Wayne:

Fort Wayne, Ind – As our community continues to develop a bicycling culture, the City of Fort Wayne invites elementary and middle-school aged students to attend one of two FREE bicycle safety workshops that will teach young bicyclists the essentials for a safe, enjoyable biking experience.

The Fort Wayne Police Department Bike Patrol will provide a 30-minute safety session on being seen, being aware and being heard when riding your bike. They will include the "ABC Quick Check,” which is the golden rule of bicycle safety, a simple pre-ride inspection to ensure your bike is road-ready. It stands for: Air (tire pressure), Brakes (stopping power), and Chain (drivetrain). They will also discuss bike helmet fitting, correct seat height, proper clothing and shoes, and basic laws.

Students are asked to bring their bikes and their helmets. While supplies last, the Indiana Department of Transportation will provide free bike helmets. After the workshop, there will be a guided ride for students to practice what they’ve learned.

The following two sessions below will provide the same safety training and are open to all elementary and middle-school aged students:

  • June 24, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.: Shoaff Park Conklin Pavilion, 6401 St. Joe Road. No registration required.
  • July 16, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.: Weisser Park Youth Center, 802 Eckart Street. Enter via Drexel Avenue. Free Registration is required for this date. Contact 260-427-6780.
