Bryan, Ohio Candy Company Buys Necco05/24/2018 The 171-year-old New England Confectionary Company, or Necco, has been sold. Bryan, Ohio-based Spangler Candy Co. had the winning bid of 18.83 million dollars. Spangler says they will continue making the Necco candies at least through the fall. It would be hard to find someone who hasn’t had a Necco wafer, or those miniature valentine hearts with sayings like “Be Mine”. The company says Union soldiers fighting in the Civil War carried Necco wafers. So did GI’s during World War II. The government shipped them by the caseload to soldiers in Europe and the Pacific because they didn’t melt and seldom broke during shipping.
