General Blood Donation Facts WHO GIVES BLOOD: Only 3 percent of the entire U.S. population donates blood. SPECIAL NEED IN SUMMER: Fewer people give blood during the summer months due to busy schedules and vacations. The need for blood often goes up due to traumatic injuries on busy roads. More people are needed to donate during the summer to prevent a blood shortage. BIG IMPACT: A single donation can save the lives of as many as three patients. NEED IS GREAT: The Red Cross needs about 550 volunteer donors a day just in the Indiana-Ohio Region to meet patient needs at 80 area hospitals. About 4 million people in the United States need blood each year – that means every two seconds, someone needs blood. WHAT’S INVOLVED: The entire blood donation process takes about an hour, and the actual donation only takes about eight to 10 minutes. WHO CAN DONATE: The basic qualifications to give blood are: You must be at least 17 years of age (or 16 with parental permission), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in general good health.
